Welcome to the Nebraska Architectural History Modules.
This website aims to be a wide-ranging introduction to the rich architectural history of the state. While there have been notable publications highlighting various facets of it (including a monograph of Omaha architect Thomas Kimball, a treatise on brickmaking in the state, a photographic highlight of 150 landmark buildings, several architectural profiles of the state capitol, and the many National Register of Historic Places nominations statewide), thus far a more comprehensive guide has been lacking. As of this writing, there is no Nebraska entry in the Society of Architectural Historians’ Buildings of the United States series, for instance, and no statewide architectural history context in the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office (NeSHPO) collection of historic contexts; the overarching Architecture in Nebraska portal within the Place Makers of Nebraska: The Architects wiki remains only a future link as well. Until such works of a more authoritative nature are completed, it is hoped that this anthology may be the next-best alternative.
Thematically, the subject-based modules are subdivided into three overarching collections. The first covers the buildings at face value when first completed: their styles, similarities, designers, and constructors. Broader considerations of early regional planning and landscape architecture at the time of construction are also touched on in this section. In part two, the element of time is added to the equation: buildings that never or only partially made it from the drawing board to completion, and buildings that were adjusted from original plans, moved, or heavily renovated historically. Part three provides a present-day examination of the state of Nebraska architecture: both destroyed and salvaged, degraded and restored. These thematic modules are followed by county-by-county photosets featuring 10,000 photos of notable architecture and architectural elements across the state, a selective 3% of the NeSHPO office's approximately 300,000 survey photos. The NeSHPO has been compiling this invaluable documentation from the late 1960s to the present, with the majority of counties systematically surveyed from the 1980s through early 2000s.
Due to the sheer scope of this project, on some level it will always remain incomplete, and future editions are anticipated that will supersede this first attempt. This is especially the case in the hunt for images of structures that are no longer extant, which add immeasurable context to the somewhat skewed sense of Nebraska architecture that would result if based only on what is still standing. But the elusive goal of completion should not prevent the sharing of what has been compiled thus far, in the hopes that it may still be of use to the people of Nebraska, and beyond, as it stands now.
A special thank you goes to the Nebraska Highway Archeology Program (in which I served as a Preservation Associate from 2020 to 2023), History Nebraska, Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office, Durham Museum, Tom McLaughlin, Adam Fletcher Sasse, and the many additional photographers, historians, and technicians who have documented, researched, and digitized various facets of the architectural history of Nebraska over the decades. A work of this nature is only made possible by their own invaluable contributions, and thus "compiler" rather than "author" is certainly the more fitting description of my own role.

To facilitate the continued growth and adjustment of these modules over time, a rather basic and easily adjustable Google Sites format has been selected. However, due to the aggregate size of the files and scope of the website, some pages and sub-page elements might take a while to load. Though mobile viewing is technically possible, the user experience will be markedly better on a robust laptop or desktop computer. (If that still does not work, as a last resort try the content-folders only Google Drive view at this link instead.) Hovering over the upper right-hand side of most embedded galleries or documents will display the option to open a larger view in a new tab, and should be a good workaround to problems of some of the gallery image thumbnails not fully loading properly in some instances.
In lieu of captions or metadata, file information is described in an ad hoc shorthand format in each file name; in the next collapsible text box below are lists of standardized abbreviations used. However, though the citation format is abbreviated, the scholarly obligations of proper referencing and permissions are not: please clear usage rights with the original image owners before further use of the images in these modules! Following are some pointers for the most prevalent collections referenced in this site:
Durham Museum: Photos demarcated with a photo identifier of "Durham BF##" are from the KMTV/Bostwick-Frohardt Photograph Collection, permanently housed at The Durham Museum: https://durhammuseum.org/exhibits-collections/photo-archive/. If you are interested in purchasing or reproducing these images, or images from other Durham Museum collections, please contact museum staff after referring to the guidelines at this link.
History Nebraska: Photos marked HN are from the main History Nebraska institutional archives; please refer to the History Nebraska Use Policy for guidelines on image/document permissions and use fees, as well as https://history.nebraska.gov/collections/research-reference-services/. For queries about use of photos/documents housed in Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office (NeSHPO) records (which typically follow a site number_year-film roll-negatives # format), please reach out to SHPO staff via https://history.nebraska.gov/historic-preservation/.
A folder-organized copy of these modules is housed at History Nebraska as well as on this website, to further ensure that this corpus of research remains freely accessible to scholars and the general public in perpetuity.
Images are typically named according to a format of “Building Info” – “Photo info,” as follows: [Name], [City/County], [Year Built] r[Year Renovated] {and/or} a[Year of Addition] x[Year Demolished], [“NRHP” if listed] - [Year Photo Taken], [Photo Source]. Variations may occur depending on unknown info/file name space constraints/etc. For before/after sequences of photos, the sequence # and an additional hyphen are inserted between the building info and photo info.
Due to Windows file name space constraints, abbreviated file names are used in many instances in the various folders of the modules, and are indexed below (and also serve as an acknowledgement of many of the principal sources this compilation is indebted to). Periodic efforts are made to combat link rot, but as with the other external links on this site, no guarantees can be made about their lasting efficacy (or frankly, security).

In the spirit of intellectual inquiry, this website is being privately maintained as a perpetually free resource to the people of Nebraska and beyond. In lieu of a donation to this page, please consider a donation to Nebraska groups that work to safeguard Nebraska's architectural heritage (Preserve Omaha, Preservation Association of Lincoln), to Nebraska history archives (Durham Museum, History Nebraska, county/local historical societies), and/or other sites/pages that this compilation relies on (Internet Archive, the APT's Building Technology Heritage Library, North Omaha History, and many others).
Though certainly not a prerequisite, a fuller sense of the context of U.S. & world architectural history can shed further light on the information shared in these modules; for an extensive list of freely available resources on the subject, see https://www.hasnt.org/further-resources.

...Hopefully this website eventually serves as a similarly timely and helpful tool for architectural history research in the state.
